7 Ways Superhero CBD Slayed My Symptoms of Hashimoto’s Autoimmune Disease

By Michele Marlo, CEO, Green Rocket LLC

This is the story of my journey with the incurable disease Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. My sometimes-debilitating struggle through incorrect diagnoses, testing, and research, finally led me to CBD. These are my personal results, based on hard science and decades of learning. I have made it my life’s work to help spread the knowledge and love of plant medicine!

Before my diagnosis with Hashimoto’s, I was a vibrant teenager. I belonged to many high school clubs, including drama, debate, and student council. I also ran the school newspaper, yearbook, and darkroom. To say I was a high energy kid would be an understatement. However, I had always struggled with my weight. As I stepped into my senior year, I began to pack on the pounds. After graduating, I fell into a deep depression, very unlike my usual happy, fun self. My mother was so concerned she took me to a doctor, who told me it was because I was overweight and I should go on a diet. I had already been on so many diets at that point; The Grapefruit Diet, Optifast, Low-Fat diets, Slimfast, Atkins. And I had tried mountains of fad diet pills, Dexatrim, Fenfluramine, Phentermine, and Meridian. I struggled to lose weight and then gained it back, plus some, for years. I believe all these fad diets, metabolism stimulators, and fat blockers contributed to my Hashimoto’s. It wasn’t until I turned twenty and saw a new doctor, Dr. Steven Wagner, that I knew what was really going on with me. He took the time to uncover all my issues and finally diagnose me. For the first time in my life, someone understood my struggles and named them. I had Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. The solution? A tiny, little Synthroid pill, he said, I would take for the rest of my life. Everything solved, right? Of course, this couldn’t be further from the truth. There is no magic bullet. It took years of research and trying different things that led to my remission. I keep my autoimmune disease in check by taking my medication, following a special diet and supplement protocol, and vaping high CBD hemp twice a day. It was the CBD that gave me the added muscle to put my disease in check.

During my research, I came across many articles and studies touting the incredible healing and protective powers of CBD. Scientists are finally beginning to understand all the health benefits of the cannabis plant. CBD currently is used to treat cancer, multiple sclerosis, seizure disorders, traumatic brain injuries, insomnia, anxiety, and PTSD. CBD, short for Cannabidiol, is one of over 100 phytocannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. Hemp contains high amounts of CBD and only traces of THC, so it doesn’t give you the psychoactive “high.” However, the best strains give me a lovely body high while letting me still maintain brain focus.

Hemp-based CBD with delta-9 THC below .3% is currently federally legal in the United States, but states’ laws may differ. Idaho, for example, has banned CBD entirely. While in many others, CBD legality varies situationally. I recommend checking the specific state you reside in for legal compliance. Also, CBD is a very safe substance, but it can interact with many common pharmaceuticals. Be sure to check for drug interactions before you decide on a product.

If there is one thing you take from this article, it should be to CHECK THE QUALITY of your CBD products. Not all CBD is created equal! Pharmaceutical-grade CBD is the purest form and ensures maximum absorption of just that one phytocannabinoid. However, most prefer full-spectrum cannabis oil, or FSO, containing a complete range of cannabinoids and terpenes. I vape 100% organic CBD hemp flower because it includes all those phytocannabinoids in their original form, working together naturally. This is known as the “entourage effect.” Separately, cannabis compounds can have medicinal attributes, but the therapeutic impact of whole plant cannabis is greater than the sum of its parts. Vaping or smoking is useful for treating acute symptoms that require immediate attention, because the effects can be felt almost immediately and last hours. But again, buyer beware! Many hemp pre-rolls use biomass and synthetic additives. Be sure you are getting 100% organic flower. How quickly you feel the effects and how long they last vary significantly with different applications. CBD-rich edibles, gummies, beverages, and tinctures usually last for hours, but the onset of effects is much slower than inhalation. Topicals like salves and lotions also vary in quality and effectiveness. Be sure to check the active ingredients and test out what works best for you. For example, I have found CBD, THC blends work best for my achy knees!

The experts at suggest, “Products with clear labels showing the quantity and ratio of CBD per dose, a manufacturing date, and a batch number (for quality control). Select products with quality ingredients: No corn syrup, transfats, GMOs, artificial additives, thinning agents, or preservatives. CBD-rich products should be lab tested for consistency and verified as free of mold, bacteria, pesticides, solvent residues, and other contaminants. Best to avoid products extracted with toxic solvents like BHO, propane, hexane, or other hydrocarbons”. Also, beware of vape pen oil that contains propylene glycol. When overheated, this chemical additive produces formaldehyde, a carcinogen. Instead, opt for products that utilize safer extraction methods such as supercritical CO2 or food-grade ethanol.

Human bodies have a system known as the endocannabinoid system that signals our cells. Research suggests CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid receptors in the brain and immune system and helps your cells respond. This results in some pretty cool benefits:

This is number 1 because untreated stress can cause toxins to build up in the body and create sickness and disease. Unfortunately, Hashimoto’s causes anxiety. And these days, we have truckloads of everyday stress that can quickly add up to toxic levels. My doctor used to prescribe me Xanax. But I’m not a fan of pharmaceuticals. Instead, I find instant relief from vaping CBD hemp flower. It’s safer, non-addictive, and a natural alternative.

Inflammation was another big issue for me. Mine was so bad I could barely walk at one point. A daily regimen of CBD and Turmeric has a dramatic anti-inflammatory effect for me. Chronic inflammation can cause countless problems, including autoimmune diseases like Hashimoto’s, leaky gut syndrome, heart disease, skin problems, increased pain, and more. People with Hashimoto’s produce an immune reaction against their own thyroid that leads to more inflammation. Numerous studies have shown that CBD engages with our endocannabinoid system, helping reduce inflammation systemically.

Chronic joint and muscle pain are some of the wretched symptoms of Hashimoto’s. For me, CBD provides instant relief and is more effective than acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Although more research is needed, the initial studies show promise for arthritis, fibromyalgia, cancer treatment relief, and migraines. One such study, published in Neurotherapeutics, finding CBD can increase the body’s anandamide, a compound associated with regulating pain and reducing pain perception. Cannabidiol may also limit inflammation in the brain and nervous system, which may benefit people experiencing pain.

Those with Hashimoto’s know all too well the brain fog so severe it can almost feel like dementia. Thankfully CBD helps with mental clarity because it is neuroprotective, meaning it helps protect brain cells from damage. Studies have shown it actually can stimulate brain cell growth and is a powerful anti-neuroinflammation agent. For me, this was a game-changer. As the CEO of a small business, I need to stay razor-sharp.

CBD is an extraordinary antioxidant and works with our endocannabinoid system to control neurocellular health. It’s a superhero when it comes to fighting free radicals that cause cellular damage. In fact, according to the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health, CBD is a more powerful antioxidant than vitamins C and E.

For me, weight gain has always been an issue. That’s why THC based products don’t work for me. One hit of a joint makes me lose all control! With CBD products, I can still get all of the benefits of the cannabis plant without the monstrous munchies.

The Sandman runs from Hashimoto’s, and those afflicted may have trouble falling asleep and sleeping through the night. This may be due to high levels of cortisol at night. This stress hormone typically peaks in the morning to wake you up. One study on CBD effects found that cortisol levels decreased more significantly when participants took 300 to 600 mg of CBD oil. These results suggest that CBD affects cortisol release, possibly acting as a sedative sleep aid.

My advice for anyone suffering from Hashimoto’s is to become your own advocate. Unfortunately, many doctors dismiss Hashimoto’s symptoms and only go by old lab values. If you have a doctor that won’t listen, dump them, and find another one. If something you try doesn’t work, try something else. The thing about Hashimoto’s is that what works for one person may not work for you. There is no one-size-fits-all approach. Do your research! Keep fighting until all the pieces fall into place. Know that flare-ups are inevitable due to various factors, including environmental stressors and plain old daily stress. But keep up the good fight. I hope that CBD will be the added regimine that helps you!
