Being the King of CO2 Is a Gas

SOMETIMES, when you want something done right, you need to do it yourself. And so, when TNB founder Travis Rypkema found himself unsatisfied with the CO2 dispersion products available on the market, he came up with his own much better product in the form of a refillable dispersal canister known as The Enhancer.

“CO2 is one of the main components of photosynthesis so it does wonders for your plants,” says Rypkema’s business partner Josh Brazier. “It’s going to make them a lot healthier and happier. They’re able to take in more nutrients and water. It’s like putting an oxygen mask on a human being. Obviously, you’re going to feel and perform better. It’s just giving you an all-natural boost.”

Today, Rypkema and Brazier are at the forefront of natural CO2 dispersal under the banner of their company, TNB, which, appropriately, stands for “There’s Nothing Better.” More than just business partners, however, these two entrepreneurs are also childhood friends.

“We actually met in grade eight and we’ve always stayed close,” says Brazier. “Now we’re closer than ever and working together 5-6 days of the week.”

As Brazier, explains, the invention of The Enhancer canister itself came out of doing some product research.

“Travis wasn’t ecstatic about some of the other products on the market offering a CO2 source,” he says. “He just started experimenting. The company itself was formed around 2013 but things started even before that. Travis basically created it a few years before that and had started making them for himself and for friends. It just got to the point where he was getting enough requests and people were saying ‘This should be on the shelves.’ It was at that point he started selling to a few stores.”

Hailing from the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia, Rypkema and Brazier were able to get their product into roughly a dozen local stores with little operating budget to speak of. When they partnered up with distribution company Green Planet Wholesale, however, TNB began to expand rapidly.

“Things really took off because we finally had some credibility,” says Brazier. “They introduced us to a lot more people and then we got into the United States and we started working with West Coast Garden Wholesale in California and Great Lakes Wholesale in Michigan. After that, we decided that the rest of the world is what we were after next. There are about 200 countries in the world and right now that’s what the plan is.”

At present, TNB is working with 14 distributors around the world to make their products available in 16 countries including Canada, the U.S., Australia, New Zealand and various countries throughout Europe.

Currently offering the fifth version of The Enhancer, based on Rypkema’s original prototype, TNB’s model of success seems to come from their commitment to delivering on promises.

“One of the basic things was getting people to believe in our product,” says Brazier. “People were just doubting it and didn’t think it could do what we said it would do.”

According to the product description, The Enhancer is capable of creating a blast of CO2 that can reach 1200 ppm in a 144 square foot area. And while one canister can be beneficial, Brazier says that some customers have definitely come to the conclusion that more is better.

“What we’re seeing is that more and more people are putting numerous bottles in their room. We have customers who have six or eight or ten bottles in their room. And then they can just get the refill packs. It allows people to utilize the same bottle numerous times. They can just refill it at a fraction of the cost. There’s a lot of environmental benefits behind that.”

In a mildly daring move, TNB has also made available a CO2 monitor, allowing for full transparency.

“It backs up what we’re saying,” says Brazier. “You can make a lot of claims but people can’t really see the numbers.”

The CO2 monitor is only one of several new products introduced by TNB since their expansion. The company also offers a natural plant booster and corrective supplement known as The Enricher, as well as pH balance products and even a set of custom trimming shears.

“We’re not trying to overdo it by any means but we have a lot to bring to the industry,” says Brazier. “We have a lot of cool innovative things that people are going to want to get their hands on.”

Throughout it all, the friends and business partners have maintained a commitment to doing things the natural way, as their company name indicates.

“We’re always trying to keep a green perspective and trying to stay on the forefront of the market. It’s the way we’ve always felt. It’s the best way to go about it. If you can keep things natural without introducing harmful chemicals, and just try to keep things as close to nature and as close to real conditions as possible, that’s great. That’s always what we’ve based our line upon.”
