When weight loss, health treatment, homeostasis, and overall balance, are thought about and treatment is considered, many don’t look in the direction of essential oils. Generally, when looking for something to aid in these journeys to health- pills, powder substances, and tea are the go to. However, studies have shown that cannabis essential oils and other essential oils can lead the way in weight loss and overall health.

It’s important to note that essential oils can “aid” in weight loss and overall health; however, they aren’t the total solution. For all things health, it’s always recommended that anything used to aid in these endeavours be paired with chats with medical professionals, mindful eating , healthy diet, and regular exercise. It’s also not recommended that current treatments be stopped and replaced with essential oils, without discussing with a medical professional.

Essential oils are found in leaves, herbs, and barks, and smell and taste like the plant itself. 

Cannabis essential oils are similar and are found in the plants stems, leaves, stalks, and even seeds. Usually, cannabis essential oils don’t contain the cannabinoids also found in the cannabis plant (THC, CBD, CBG, CBN, etc.), however,they do contain terpenes. Terpenes in cannabis are in the same glands that produce cannabinoids, and are responsible for the aroma and flavor of the cannabis plant. They aid in pain relief, relaxation, focus, acuity, and more. 

Essential oils, including those found in cannabis, can aid in weight loss, skin health, hair health, balancing the body and mind, and be used for aromatherapy, which contributes to stress-relief and anti-anxiety. Studies have shown benefits of using cannabis essential oils and other essential oils. World Health Net describes cannabis essential oils as:

The History of Medicinal Use of  Cannabis Essential Oils and Other Essential Oils

For hundreds of years, people have used cannabis oil, cannabis essential oil, and other essential oils for health reasons. Not only are these oils used to aid in treating some medical conditions, they are also used for aromatherapy, and play a huge role in rituals and ceremonies- which are also used to heal. Cannabis essential oil became an essential part of survival in history, it became routine and needed for the well-being of man, to capture the aroma of plants to promote overall health. Not only on the physical level, but on an emotional and spiritual level as well.

Cannabis essential oils, cannabis oil, and other essential oils were used in Ancient Egypt, China, Greece, India, and Rome dating back to B.C. Below is an overview of different countries, and their uses of cannabis essential oil and other essential oils in history:

Ancient Egypt–  Essential oils were used as medicine and also used to perform religious rituals. Cannabis essential oil was used in Egypt for medicinal and spiritual purposes and those wealthy enough, used the oil as perfume.  

China– Herbs and plants are a major part of medicine, therefore, essential oils are used for a vast number of medical treatments. Even today, herbal medicine is huge in the East.

Greece: Hippocrates, a well known holistic doctor was a firm believer in holistic treatment, therefore used a lot of plant therapy. Greek soldier’s used essential oils to fight infections.

India– For 3000 years, aromatic plants and oils have been a major part of the Indian medical practice. The use of medicinal oils was key during the breakout of the Bubonic Plague where essential oils were used as antibiotics.

Rome– In Rome, essential oils were primarily used for beauty and hygiene: perfuming baths, beds, clothes, and bodies.

Biblical Times: Hemp, man’s oldest cultivated crop, was known for its essential oil aroma and therapeutic abilities on the central nervous system; it was a key in helping to release stress and relax the body.

How Cannabis Essential Oils and Other Essential Oils Aid in Weight Loss and Overall Homeostasis

Because essential oils aid in mental health, the benefits can also contribute to weight loss. Many of the struggles faced on the journey to lose weight live within the mind: cravings, emotional stability, balance/clarity, etc. Using essential oils and cannabis essential oils to heal medical, psychological, and physical conditions, naturally promote and assist in weight loss and medical healing. Many times, the cause of difficulty in weight loss and recovering from medical conditions/complications is due to mental health struggles, chronic pain, lack of balance, anxiety, stress, etc. 

When cannabis essential oils and other essential oils are consumed, they are aiding the body in recovery. In the case of cannabis, the terpenes found in the essential oils of the cannabis plant, help promote the entourage effect, which is the team up of cannabinoids, terpenes, and essential oils, to help relieve a multitude of complications. 

As related to essential oils and weight loss, The Smell and Taste Treatment and Research Institute of Chicago, discovered that inhaling a scent smell like rosemary, peppermint, grapefruit, orange etc., regularly throughout the day, especially when hungry can suppress the desire to taste and therefore eat, and that by inhaling an aroma deeply 3-6 times in each nostril, the desire to eat is inhibited.

As related to cannabis essential oils and weight loss, the terpenes found in the glands that produce essential oils, are known to contribute to weight loss by suppressing the appetite. For instance, terpene- Humulene, is known to suppress appetite.

Overall, essential oils are safe to use if approved by your physician and purchased from a reputable, quality source. It is important to understand the recommended uses of each oil. Using essential oils in the wrong form can cause adverse reactions such as: burns, trigger asthma and/or allergies, and can interfere with certain medications.

It is recommended that photosensitive oils not be used in the sun. Photosensitive oils are oils that haven’t been diluted, they have no carrier agent. Using undiluted oils can be harmful due the potency of oils. Please research and use as recommended.
