DELTA 8 FEELIN’ GREAT
I want to start by saying I am a lightweight when it comes to weed. So, when Delta 8 THC hit the market, I was intrigued. “It gets you high,” they said, “but not crazy high.” Delta-8-THC is not to be confused with delta-9 THC, which is the primary form of THC found in cannabis. The two compounds share many similar properties, including reports they stimulate appetite, reduce nausea, and relieve pain. Yet, delta-8-THC has a lower psychoactive potency than delta-9-THC.
NEW KID ON THE BLOCK
The cannabis plant contains over 100 cannabinoids. While we have a good understanding of the primary cannabinoids like delta-9-THC and CBD, delta-8-THC studies are still relatively new.
Delta-8-THC occurs only in trace amounts in the cannabis plant. It is also a degraded form of THC that is not produced directly by the plant’s cannabinoid-synthesizing enzymes. So how can we get enough of it to be helpful? Commercial growers and extractors increase delta-8-THC yields through selective breeding and molecular isolation. Basically they have to extract it from a whole heck of a lot of hemp!
IS THE GRASS GREENER?
Delta-8-THC binds to the central nervous system’s CB1 receptors. The CB1 receptor is responsible for the majority of THC’s psychoactive effects. Additionally, delta-8-THC binds with CB2 receptors. So, bonus points for hitting both body and brain.
So how do Delta-8-THC and delta-9-THC differ? There is a notable difference in how our endocannabinoid receptors bind to each THC, which may account for the clearer high, decreased anxiety, and increased ability to concentrate associated with delta-8. Furthermore, delta-9-THC is not as stable as delta-8-THC, which has a long shelf life. Also important to note, Delta-8-THC is approximately half the strength of delta-9-THC.
THE ENTOURAGE EFFECT
The entourage or ensemble effect is based on the principle that THC performs better when combined with the diverse array of other cannabinoids, terpenoids, flavonoids, and other compounds found in cannabis, rather than when taken alone. When compared to isolated THC, this enhancement may result in more favorable therapeutic outcomes. While our current understanding of the entourage effect stems from delta-9-THC research, the molecular similarity to delta-8-THC may indicate that it produces enhanced effects when taken as whole-plant medicine rather than an isolate. But, additional research is needed to gain a better understanding of this.
Many clinical studies cite delta-8-THC’s unique properties and therapeutic potential, including:
- PAIN RELIEVING
- REDUCES INFLAMMATION
- RELIEVES ANXIETY
- HELPS WITH NAUSEA
- STIMULATES APPETITE
If you’re considering delta-8-THC, you must understand the majority of our current knowledge comes from animal studies, and more research in humans is necessary to truly understand its effects.
IS DELTA-8 LEGAL?
The majority of people believe that because THC is associated with marijuana, it is illegal. That is not true, as delta-8 THC is distinct from delta-9 THC.
State side, the Farm Bill was passed in 2018 exempting hemp-derived products containing less than 0.3 percent delta-9 THC from the list of controlled substances. Therefore, it is legal to use and distribute such products as long as the delta-9 THC content is within the permitted limits. Delta-8 THC is technically legal on a federal level because it’s derived from hemp, which contains negligible delta-9 THC traces.
Regardless of the signed federal rule, states have the authority to regulate delta-8 THC within their borders. While delta-8 THC is not legal in every state, it is in the majority of them. It is prohibited (as of this article’s date) in only 11 states: Utah, Rhode Island, Montana, Mississippi, Iowa, Idaho, Delaware, Colorado, Arkansas, Arizona, and Alaska.
Additionally, it’s worth noting that delta-8’s legal status has nothing to do with the legality of cannabis. Therefore, just because recreational cannabis is legal in your state does not mean delta-8 THC is, as Colorado and Arizona have demonstrated.
Additionally, state laws vary. For example, Oregon permits intrastate transfers of delta-8 THC derived from hemp as long as it complies with Oregon Department of Agriculture laws and rules, including having less than 0.3 percent THC. To sell in that state, however, you must obtain authorization from the Oregon Liquor Control Commission.
Bear in mind that state laws are subject to change. Additionally, the state laws and the federal laws override each other. My best advice is to know your local laws before purchasing any hemp product. Things change quickly, and you don’t want to break the law! The good news is, if delta-8 becomes illegal, delta-10 and over 100 more cannabinoids are ready to step up! Here’s to many years of Cannabis Bliss!

MICHELE MARLO, CEO GREEN ROCKET CBD
As the CEO of Green Rocket, LLC, headquartered in sunny San Diego, I’m often asked what inspired me to quit the ad business and start a cannabis company. The answer is very personal. My inspiration came from my decades’ struggle with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. A disease that caused me debilitating inflammation, anxiety, and pain. Doctors tried for two years to relieve my symptoms, with little to no success. Then, a friend suggested CBD. I was shocked to find immediate relief! To say this felt like a miracle would be an understatement. Thus, I began my studies of cannabis, CBD, CBG, and the hundred-plus cannabinoids in this powerhouse plant. After much research, I started selling hemp flower products. Our product line quickly expanded to lotions, tinctures, lubes, and gummies. Green Rocket is pleased to sell wholesale and retail hemp products that are a cut above the industry standards. With hemp flower sourced from 100% certified organic farms in Oregon. All our products have COAs that are available online and by request. Visit GreenRocketCBD.com to learn more.
