Hemp – yes, the varieties of Cannabis that contain 0.3% or less THC content (by dry weight), have been liberated. The US government did pass the Farm Bill in 2019 that ensures that any cannabinoid found in the Cannabis plant from hemp will be legal… by a licensed grower of course.
Why does this matter? Well, as a tobacco smoker who has failed at quitting, I set out to find the most economical way to break the habit without breaking the habit. Before you judge me, I know smoking is bad.. But I love the excuse of taking a defiant break (during work hours) and the ritual of ignition.
So why am I trying to quit when I love it so much? Well, simply put, besides the serious health risks, it’s costing far too much to maintain the habit. Also, I’ve been trying to incorporate more CBD into my daily ritual but don’t trust all the processed products out there. I like my CBD direct from the Cannabis plant, smoked.
Looking at what’s available across the United States, as the Hemp craze is in full swing, I brought back what I think are the most common and notable hemp cigarettes to rank.
(Disclaimer: Ensure they are legal in your state. I wouldn’t want you to spend any time in the federal pen, so check your privilege.)
Now, all ranking systems are somewhat subjective and to be honest, I haven’t tried all of these hemp cigarettes (yet). So, this ranking is based on economics of how much CBD you get for the cost of the product. It should be noted that none of these brands have asked us to rank their products.
To start off we have all the factors that we took into consideration. Price, amount of cigarettes, and how much CBD you get in each cigarette.
1) Plain Jane (website)
Coming in at first place is Plain Jane’s Hemp Prerolls. You’ll be hard pressed to tell the difference between these Plain Jane hemp prerolls and a regular cigarette… besides the smell and taste of course. With 0% THC involved, you won’t get flagged for having THC in your system. Although they don’t have the most CBD per cigarette, they definitely have the most “bang for your buck“. I like the simple packaging and they certainly look like regular cigarettes which I like.
Each cigarette contains 72mg of CBD. With the total price being $13 for a pack of 20, you get roughly 111 mg per dollar spent.
In second place we have Hemptranc’s CBD Cigarette’s. Each cigarette is machine rolled to look identical to a normal cigarette. Hemptranc’s CBD Cigarette’s rank top three for your total amount of CBD per cigarette. They do contain 0.3% THC which is just at the limit for them to be legal. They also come in a tin case so that you don’t destroy them whey shoving them into your pocket. Their cone filter is a nice touch.
Each cigarette contains 120mg of CBD. With the total price being $14 for a pack of 10, you get roughly 86 mg per dollar spent.
3) Wild Hemp (website)
Next we have Wild Hemp’s CBD Hempetts. Wild hemp cigarettes come in three different flavours; Standard, Sweet, and pineapple Blaze. Each cigarette contains 50 mg of CBD, which puts them on the lower end of the spectrum. The cheap price is what keeps them at the top of our list. You can also find them across many convenience stores which makes them, frankly, convenient.
Each cigarette contains 50mg of CBD. With the total price being $13 for a pack of 20, you get roughly 77 mg per dollar spent.
4) Earthy (website)
Stepping of the podium we have a very close fourth. Earthy’s Hemp Smokes are only 1 mg less than the Hempetts in terms of CBD you get per dollar spent. They do beat the Hempetts out in CBD per cigarette with 76 mg per cigarette.
Each cigarette contains 76mg of CBD. With the total price being $20 for a pack of 20, you get roughly 76 mg per dollar spent.
5) Vance Global (website)
Missing the podium by only 2mg Vance Global’s Hemp Cigarettes give you 75mg for every dollar spent. This Milwaukee based establishment is hitting the top of the leader board for “quality”, containing 150mg of CBD each per cig. If you require a high dosage, then these might be the choice for you.
Each cigarette contains 150mg of CBD. With the total price being $20 for a pack of 10, you get roughly 75 mg per dollar spent.
6) Orangi Toke (website)
The last half decent cigarette on our list is Orangi Tokes Hemp Cigarettes. These cigarettes also rank first in highest CBD per cigarette with 150mg, however they are 5$ more expensive than Vance Global’s Hemp Cigarettes. Once again if you require a high dosage, then these might be the choice for you.
Each cigarette contains 150mg of CBD. With the total price being $25 for a pack of 10, you get roughly 60 mg per dollar spent.
7) Lucky Leaf (website)
As we near the end of our list we se a steep decline in value. Lucky Leaf’s Hemp Cigarettes don’t have much that are to unique about them apart from the fact that the total amount of CBD in the pack comes in at around 420mg. With only 42mg of CBD per cigarette. They are however the cheapest pack on this list with sweet packaging. Great pack to throw around at music festivals.
With the total price being $12 for a pack of 10, you get roughly 33 mg per dollar spent.
8) TERPY J’S (website)
Terpy J’s Hemp joints can come in a variety of flavours. They come in a pack of 6 and their own tin case. Making them stand out more than some other’s on this list. With only 50mg of CBD per cigarette they come third last for CBD per cigarette. Reviews however suggest that they have excellent flavours and terpenes, which may make them your joint of choice. However, since I’m looking for a cigarette alternative these didn’t do it for me. If I’m going to smoke a joint style roll and have people staring at me, I’ll smoke something with THC.
With the total price being $25 for a pack of 6, you get roughly 12 mg per dollar spent.
9) Shaboink (website)
Shaboink’s Posty OG are part of a collaboration with Post Malone’s. While this seems “cool” you might want to consider that they only have 6mg of CBD per cigarette. These might be your choice if you still believe that CBD will get you high and you want to try “a CBD”.
Each cigarette contains 6mg of CBD (Don’t ask how we know… we just do). With the total price being $12 for a pack of 20, you get roughly 10 mg per dollar spent.
10) CBD Fatty
In last place we have what is known as a “rip off“. The CBD Fatty is $15 for one pre-roll… rough. They do claim that they are extremely flavourful, so who knows. They may be the Apple of Hemp joints.
Each joint contains 100mg of CBD. With the total price being $15 for 1, you get roughly 7 mg per dollar spent.
Nobody has the “It” factor yet. None of these brands stand out as our “go to”. With the cheapest pack coming in at $12 (and questionable quality), I feel we have a long way to go as a full replacement for tobacco. That being said, I’m looking forward to seeing more brands emerge and adding hemp cigarettes as part of my “cutting” back on cigs. If anyone reading has a preference, then let us know.
