Skunk SEO guide

Getting them green

Your goal is to get both these sections green. Readability and SEO (Search Engine Optimization) both affect how your article will rank on google. If both sections are green, it will increase your likelihood to gain views and can make the article more likely to be shared. These sections will also have an effect on the website as a whole. The better the content on the site, the more likely google will recommend the site. Same goes if both these categories are red or empty. Google may view these as spam or incomplete articles. Having a lot of content like this on our site can result in google lowering the likelihood of people finding our content and our site

What to Look For

Focus Keyphrase

For your article to being registering for SEO, you will need to input a focus keyphrase. This keyphrase should be you tittle, or at least be part of it. The focus keyphrase is what you want people to search for on google to find your article.

Finding a focus keyphrase may take some time, but it means that you will be answering questions that other people are interested in. There are two main steps to finding your focus keyphrase.

Step 1: Find a topic that people are searching for.

Make sure to check what words also rank the best for your question: “Weed, Cannabis, Marijuana”.

One way to start searching for topic is to use

This website asks you to input a topic, and it will find questions people have asked google that are similar to what you initialy inputed. The free version only allows you to use it once per day, so use it wisely. You will then need to input these topics into a program/site that will show you the monthly searches for that topic.

Some examples below

If you have access to an SEM Rush account this is your best bet. Use the Keyword magic tool to find what people are searching for.

Jaaxy allows you to search for 30 different topics. The site is unclear if it is 30 searches  per day, but they don’t double check your email so just use fake ones.

Your aren’t done yet. Just because lots of people search for a topic, doesn’t mean that people will ever find our article. Other people could have already written about this topic. Once you have a topic that has over at least 10 searches, you will need to do an “allintiitle:” search.

To do this type “allintiitle: ” into the google search bar, then put your search term after it. This will give you how many articles have already been written about this topic.

Some math involved in this next part… but don’t be scared. Use this “formula” to calculate your “Diamond value”

(How many people search for the topic / How many articles have already ben written about this topic)

(Search Volume / “Allintitle:”) = Diamond Value

If your topic has 1000 monthly searches, and and 20 articles already written about it, then the formula would look like:

(1000 / 20) = 50

You wan’t to get the Diamond value to be above a 10. What this means is that your article will get more consistent monthly views. These articles will continue to drive/mine traffic for our site until people stop searching for these topics. A good higher diamond value will mean that an article will “mine”/drive more traffic to our site.

Make sure to include your focus keyword at lease five in your article and once in a header text. These numbers depend based on how many words are in your article.

Some times you may not be able to find a focus keyphrase that has a high enough “Diamond value”, or maybe you are writing an article that you think people should know about. Simply chose create one that sounds interesting. Use this the same way you. Your article should always be based on your focus keyphrase. The Diamond value will help you target areas that others have not done yet. The focus keyphrase and how you incorperate it into your article will effect how your article ranks.

Headers and Formating

You should always start your article with an introduction paragraph. This paragraph needs to include your focus key phrase. This paragraph is the first ting google checks. If it’s not included, then google may think the article was “click bait”, or the information isn’t what people are actually looking for.

All headers should be formated to be “Headed 3”. Do not use header formating to make parts of the article bold. All other text should be set to “Paragraph”

When initially writing your article, do not change any of your font size. The website theme will automatically change this, so it will have no effect.

Key points

Headers – H3 and bold

Text – Paragraph

Text size – Don’t change

Google also looks for well formated articles. That means that they aren’t looking for a giant block of text. It is recommended that you break up every the text at least every 300 words with a heading or a sub heading. Each paragraph should also only include a maximum of 150 words. Each sentence should only include a maximum of 20 words.

You can use the Yoast readability tool located at the bottom of the post page to check if your article is formated properly.

Use the “Alternative Text” section to put a small description of the photo. AT least one of you photos “alt texts” should be your focus keyphrase.

You can find where to input your header image in the side bar. This is the photo That will be displayed on the home page as well as on google.

This image should give an idea as to what the article is about.

Header image should be 1000W X 800H

Categorizing and Tags

You may have noticed that we changed the theme of the Skunk Website.

The header sections will be the new categories. Make sure to categorize them into the new updated sections. This will make people who are navigating the site more likely to click on an article, because they have found what they are actually looking for. Only use one category.

Use tags to tell people a little about what the article. Use only 1-2 words for a tag. Wen have already started using some so it might be good to use the same ones, as people can filter their search by tags. If there are to many tags, or duplicates, the site will begin to look messy

Wordpress automatically formats your article in accordance to the them we are using. It should be noted that adding extra “returns/enters” when writing your article will actually add two extra spaces. The first photo below shows the incorrect way to format. The second photo shows how your text should look.

DO not use “tab” to format your work or use the space bar other than in between words.

The workflow should look something like this.
